Know Your Fabric

What is Jamdani?

Jamdani is a textured weave where extra wefts are used to create patterns. These fabrics are remarkable for their fine texture, intricacy, and flawless execution of patterns.

How to identify handloom Jamdani?

Look for the distinctive U-shaped loops formed by the weft as it moves and turns to create the pattern. These loops are a key feature of handloom Jamdani fabric. In machine-made fabrics, this feature is usually absent. When you encounter Jamdani fabric in person, check for these U-shaped loops to ensure you're getting an authentic handwoven piece.

How is Jamdani woven?

Jamdani is a discontinuous weft technique. A small shuttle of thread is passed through the weft, and motifs are interlaced into the weave by adding a denser thread by hand. This technique is considered one of the most time-intensive and advanced hand weaving methods in the world.

Origin & History:

Jamdani is derived from a Persian word, "jam," meaning floral, and "dani," which translates to vase or container, named after the decorative floral patterns found in Dhakai Muslin. The nawabs of Awadh (a region in Uttar Pradesh) developed a fondness for Jamdani, and under their patronage during the 18th century, it began to be produced in Dhaka, Nadia (West Bengal), and Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh). Jamdani is the only surviving variety of traditional muslins.

Styling

The lightweight Jamdani fabric and comfortable fit make it versatile enough for all kinds of occasions - be it a work day, a casual day out, a formal gathering, a getaway, or time spent with loved ones. If you don't wish to wear it as a matching set, you can pair the kurta with plain white flared bottoms, and the pants can be styled with a plain white kurta. Mix it up with your favourite jewellery - silver, gold, or whatever you prefer. Style it your way, always :)
